Get InvolvedJoining clubs or volunteering is a great way to make the most of your University experience and explore interests outside the classroom. Whether it’s joining a cultural club, getting involved with your department’s council or washing cars for Shinerama to raise money for cystic fibrosis research; at Brock, there’s something for everyone! Student of the Month
Mike Mackett: December Student of the MonthFor your December holiday gift, we give you Mike Mackett! And what a gift he is! Co-founder and President of the Running Club, Mike and members of the club have ran in and donated money to the following organizations: Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Walker Family Cancer Center, Wounded Warriors, Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation, St. Johns Ambulance, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, St. Josephs Healthcare, just to name a few. Mike’s goals for the running club are simple and significant: promotion of a healthy lifestyle on campus and most importantly, promoting an accepting atmosphere for anyone of any fitness level. Alongside the Running Club, Mike is also on the cross country team (go figure), volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters with the Game-On program, has worked with Youth University as the ropes course and day programming specialist from April until September this past year, is going to be the captain of the Brock Bowls for Kids in 2012 for the third time, and a past member of the Brock Off Campus society. Mike also shows leadership in the classroom through the Concurrent Education program, and in my opinion, those students have the best student-teacher around! Just this past term, Mike was recognized by Blackberry and Campus Perks as the “Top Student Leader” at Brock University! So we’d be crazy not to recognize him as our Student of the Month. When asked what motivates him and what drives him to be a student leader he responded with, “I want to make as much of a difference as I can, and to be the best role model I can be.” Mike says that he loves working with youth; he strives to be the positive role model that he never had. Well Mike, you’ve succeeded. You are up there with the best of the best, not only are you a wonderful role model to the youth you work with, but you’re a great example of a student leader right here on Brock’s campus. Thank you so much for your leadership and dedication Mike! And on behalf of the Brock University Students’ Union, happy holidays everybody!
